Upcoming teaching and events!

March 16, 2011

Well things have been crazy here at the UCYG over the past three or so weeks!  Since the youth didn’t meet for Ash Wednesday, I took that extra time to do some much need upgrades, repairs and prep work for the upcoming season in our ministry!!  It has been an awesome transformation, one you will have to check out for yourself!  We have added stage lighting, redesigned the stage, painting the floor in the teaching room, added some decoration, rewired the youth rooms, painted over the graffiti wall, became a self-sustaining musical enterprise(!), and other modifications I can’t think of to mention!  All in all, I cannot wait to have students come out to the Loft tonight to check it out!

Along the lines of having students come out tonight, is the topic of teaching.  Over the next 5 weeks or so we will be covering the topic of purity.  We are going to be talking about purity and sex the way God intended, not the way that our world and media sources portray it.  Here are some of the areas we will cover:

  • Healthy Sexuality – Why God created sex and His plan for it.
  • Is Sex Safe? – Honoring God with our bodies within His plan.
  • Renew Your Mind – Change the way you perceive sexuality
  • Overt Your Eyes – Choosing to honor God with our eyes.
  • Guard Your Heart – A healthy self-image changes everything.

As we cover these areas of purity, we will diving into God’s Word to find out exactly what He wants from us in all aspects of purity.  If you have questions concerning this series, please give me a call at the church or on my cell phone if you have the number.  You can also  leave a comment on this post or send me an email at HillsideUCYG@gmail.com.

At the end of this series, students will have the opportunity to respond.  The response will be a statement that they want to remain sexually and mentally pure until they’re married.  They will be able to demonstrate this commitment by signing (or tagging if you prefer) or new graffiti wall.  This will be a weekly reminder to students that they have made a commitment to God, the youth group, their family and their future spouse to remain pure!

I hope you will join with me in praying for this series!

Our next trip will be a shirt drive over to Indiana Wesleyan for a Christian concert!  The good people who put on the Fusion conference year after year have brought in a couple of awesome bands for their Friday night concert!  The headlining band is an exciting quintet of gentlemen known as Family Force Five!  They put on one of the most exciting shows there is.  They bring a ton of energy and passion to the stage as they rock out their hits like: Love Addict, Kountry Gentlemen, and Get Your Back Off the Wall.  There are a few other bands that will be there as well including Flame, Sharon Irving, and the Brandon Grissom Band.  All of this only costs $10!  That’s an oppotunity we can’t refuse!  It all goes down April 1, 2011.

February 14, 2011

Well, the wait is almost over, the Irony retreat is finally happening!  This Friday, February 18th, all of you high school students who are coming to the retreat need to be at Hillside no later than 6:00.  We will be heading out shortly thereafter.  We’re going to play games, meet awesome people, learn about the God who loves us without needing us, and most importantly worship God! We’ll be back at Hillside around 2:30 on Sunday the 20th.  Here’s a short list of things you’ll need/want:

UCYG Hoodie/INKED Pictures

January 31, 2011

Hey everyone, I know I have been announcing this for a while at youth group, but I never know how much of this information gets back to your parents.  So parents, here you go!  This is our hoodie for the youth group.  The cost is $20.  I have been making this announcement for over two months and I extended one week past the original due date!  I am turning in an order for these hoodies on Thursday, February 3, 2011.  That means that this Wednesday is the last day to get your money and size in for the first order. I am willing to do a second order if there is interest.  The $20 cost should be the same even if we only put in a one hoodie order.  Here is a link to the hoodie we will be using: Click Here.  Let me know by Wednesday!

Also, I uploaded the pictures from last weekend’s retreat!  Click the dancing Grant below and enjoy!

Just got INKED!

January 24, 2011

Well, the INKED retreat is officially over, approximately 30 middle schoolers are in their classrooms right now, fighting to stay awake!  We had an amazing time at Rainbow Christian Camp!  Everything from worship to speaking, meals to games was awesome.  The students heard from 4 different speakers who wove messages together to help them realize that God is using them to write, not just their own story, but HIS story!  We learned that our setting and the characters in our lives influence the way the story move and flow.  We learned that conflict in our lives can be used to help us grow and develop as characters.  Along the same lines, struggling with our faith, or wrestling with God (like Jacob did), is not necessarily a bad thing.  On Saturday night, we heard about David accepting God’s calling on his life to be a shining example as King of Israel.  Upon accepting this calling, David is anointed by Samuel the prophet, signifying the decision he made to follow God’s story for his life.  With this in mind, the students and even the adults were challenged to accept that God is writing a story in their lives.  They were told that if they felt like God was wanting more from them, that they could come forward, find their pastor, and be “anointed” through prayer (and a little bit of olive oil!)!  From our group alone, we had four students come forward to accept that God has been drawing them closer!  On Sunday morning we learned about the choices within the story that form and shape the direction and ultimately the end result.

Our students made a commitment to reading their Bible on a daily basis.  They also made a commitment to be focused and attentive during our worship times at the Loft!  I know that our youth group is going to benefit from the work God was doing this weekend!  If you couldn’t be there for any reason, or you are a parent who hasn’t heard this from their student yet, I hope you are encouraged by what you have read!  God is awesome!
